Queensland Household Energy Survey 2026

Introduction

Welcome to the Queensland Household Energy Survey (QHES) 2026 – Queensland’s most comprehensive survey capturing household insights and trends in energy behaviours and attitudes.

The QHES, an annual survey conducted since 2009, provides insights into consumers’ views of the energy sector, how they are managing household electricity bills and how they use electricity in the home. It also explores consumers’ sentiment towards electricity supply, reliability and cost, together with tracking trends in perceptions and attitudes towards new technologies such as solar PV, battery storage, electric vehicles, and active management of their energy use.

You can explore this year’s results by theme through clicking on the themed tiles below. Within most sections you can view the data by location, age group, solar PV ownership and other household characteristics. You can also select the “Trend” button to see how the overall results have changed over time.

Please note that the QHES 2026 results are based on the 4,301 participants that completed this year’s survey. While the survey aims to be representative of the Queensland households, there is a higher incidence of participants who own solar PV, Electric Vehicles (EVs) and battery storage compared to other sources. Furthermore, some questions relate only to those who have particular technologies such as solar PV, EVs and battery storage and should not be taken as a representation of all households in Queensland.

2026 Insights

This year’s survey results show that households are continuing to feel the impact of cost-of-living pressures, and concern about household bills, including electricity, has grown. These concerns are translating into the greatest willingness to shift to a daytime usage tariff and converting from gas to electricity, driven by cost.

Interest in recommendations to save on electricity bills has increased and the proportion of households who report having a monthly billing cycle has overtaken the proportion who are on quarterly billing, aligning with high uptake of smart meters.

Ownership and consideration of buying/upgrading solar PV, battery storage and Electric Vehicles (EV) have notably increased, mostly driven by an intent to reduce spend on electricity bills.
The proportion of households intending to purchase solar PVs has reached the highest levels to date, as has the proportion of households with solar owning battery storage, both driven by an intent to reduce electricity bills. Households who have indicated EV ownership and consideration to buy are up significantly from last year.
